Biology students receive Tri-Beta grants for independent research

[William Jewell College]

Seven Jewell biology students received recognition for their work on independent research projects in November 2011. They submitted Tri-Beta research grants to the national office and were awarded funding to conduct their research after favorable review from biology faculty at other institutions.

• Loren Archibeque and Kelly Roark, Advisor: Dr. Tara Allen: “FAT/CD36 Expression in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells: Roles in Fatty Acid Uptake and Atherosclerosis”
• Ashley Pooker, Advisor: Dr. Jennifer Moody: “An investigation of anticancer properties of Tradescantia ohiensis (Family: Commelinaceae)”
• Cassi Johnson and Chris Koehn, Advisor: Dr. Lori Wetmore: “Investigation of the role of AKT and JNK pathways in induced autophagic cell death in human glioma cell lines”
• Michael McClanahan and Logan Pettz, Advisor: Dr. Tara Allen: “Detection and analysis of fatty acid translocase (CD36) in intracellular pools of cultured A7r5 vascular smooth muscle cells”
