Debate Teams Qualify for Nationals
Four teams on Jewell’s Debate Squad qualified to attend the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence tournament in March. With only the top 64 teams in the nation selected out of nearly 600, Jewell will make up nearly 20 percent of the field. David Dingess and Andrew Potter are ranked as the sixth-best team in the country and received a first-round bid along with Kyle Mellon and Matt Reisener. In addition, receiving second-round bids were the team of Spencer Shanks and Tyler White along with Rosemary Loehr and Stephen Ahal.
The semester started with a tournament at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., where Jewell placed third overall. For the second year in a row, a Jewell team won the Webster University tournament championship in St. Louis. Spencer Shanks and Tyler White took home the top prize, the squad as a whole placed third and Kyle Mellon won the top individual speaker award. Also performing well were the teams of Stephen Ahal and Rosemary Loehr (third place), Kyle Mellon and Matt Reisener (ninth place) and Rodney Chowning and Michael Lacombe (tenth place).
Justice Summit
The Center for Justice and Sustainability will host its annual Justice Summit February 24-25. This year’s focus is the Village Partners Project in Honduras, featuring small group discussions led by guests from Honduras and Pritchard Service Award recipient presentations. For the full Justice Summit agenda and registration information, visit www.jewell.edu/cjs.
The featured guest speaker will be Marco Cáceres, cofounder of projecthonduras.com and director of the Conference on Honduras. In these volunteer roles, he helps create an alternative model of development for poor countries—one that is weighted more toward attracting “human capital” than financial. He is also the editor of the English-language Honduras Weekly newspaper. A native of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Marco is a senior space analyst in Fairfax, Va., and author of the World Space Systems Briefing. He directs special studies involving the space market and is regularly cited by both the trade and popular press for his space market forecasts and insights.
