Jewell's SIFE team leads campus 'Trick or Treat' fundraiser for Harvesters

William Jewell’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) will be teaming up with multiple organizations on campus including the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, the Non-Profit Leadership Association and Skip-a-Meal  in order to collect food for the Campbell’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge. All food collected will be donated locally to Harvesters of Kansas City.

The group will host its first-ever Trick-or-Treat on the Jewell Quad from 6 to 8 p.m. October 29 on the campus in Liberty, Mo. Admission to this event will be $2 or two canned goods per child. Representatives of campus organizations will have treat tables and games set up around the Quad. Children can trick-or-treat, play games and show off their costumes. (Rain location is Jewell Hall, on the south side of the Quad.)

Jewell students will also be soliciting donations of food or funds on Halloween night in Liberty neighborhoods. Harvesters is seeking canned foods, peanut butter, cereal, boxed meals and rice to stock its food pantry for the coming holiday season.

The SIFE team and fellow Jewell students are initiating their hunger elimination campaign this fall to collect at least 25,000 pounds of food. The project is part of SIFE’s Let’s Can Hunger Challenge, created by the Campbell’s Corporation in an effort to raise hunger awareness; to utilize this awareness to instigate action in the form of urgent hunger relief; and to empower individuals who are in need to defeat the hardship of hunger. SIFE teams across the world have been challenged to collect food and raise awareness of the issue of hunger relief.

Jewell’s SIFE team was recently awarded a third-runner-up trophy at the SIFE USA National Exposition competition in Minneapolis, Minn. The recognition places the team among the top 16 SIFE teams in the U.S. SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on more than 1,400 campuses in 48 countries. Their mission is to “To bring together the top leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business.” For more information concerning SIFE, please visit www.sife.org.
